About this collection

Hawaii State Archives Place Names Index is organized geographically by island, by district, then alphabetically by local area place name. Many of the index entries refer to Hawaiian government records from the Privy Council, Interior Department, Foreign Office, Commissioner of Public Lands, and Territorial Governor’s administration records. The Place Names Index is NOT a comprehensive list of all land records.

At this time place names for letters A, E, U are available online. Entries to the online Land Index will be updated periodically. The complete Land Index is available in the reading room of the Hawaii State Archives.

The index entries reference Hawaiian government records collections in the Hawaii State Archives, Honolulu, Hawaii. The Archives is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Records are retrieved from storage until 3:30 pm. Reference service is provided via telephone: 808-586-0329 and email at archives@hawaii.gov.
