About this collection

The Index to Portuguese Passenger Manifests, 1843-1900 includes the following information: name, age, profession, names of family members on the same ship, country of origin, ship's name, date of arrival in Hawaii or departure from Hawaii, port of embarkation or destination. The index is searchable by name only.

Index entries appear as they do on the actual passenger manifests. Many of the manifests are handwritten and were subject to the interpretation of the indexer.

Index entries for the same names were put together in one multipage file to expedite access to the index entries. Although the names on the index are the same, they may not be referring to the same individual. Use clues such as age, date of arrival or departure, and names of family members traveling with the passenger to determine if this is an index entry for the individual you are researching.

Most of the Passenger Manifests being referenced by this index can be found at Hawaii State Archives as Microfilm MFL No. 73, Ships Manifests, or Series 82, Records of Passenger Arrivals and Departures, 1843-1900.

Surnames beginning with de or da appear this way on the index:
  • de Jesus, Maria is listed as Jesus, Maria de
  • da Silva, Manoel is listed as Silva, Manoel da
